Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium unveiled the newly renovated Hubbard Orangutan Forest in 2024. This stunning exhibit immerses visitors in a vibrant, natural setting reminiscent of the lush forests of Indonesia.
Initially constructed in 1965 alongside the original Gorilla building, the Orangutan building underwent minor renovations in 2005 with the addition of the Elevator building. In 2022, the exhibit was closed for construction to receive significant renovations and improve HVAC systems, air quality and circulation, lighting, and enclosure viewing areas. The enclosures have climate control, humidity monitoring and distribution, and concealed ventilation systems to enhance the habitat.
Interactive technology was strategically placed throughout the forest's viewing area, encouraging guests to learn more about these incredible primates and their natural habitat. Keeper engagement areas were outfitted with diffused lighting to allow for close encounters and provide behind-the-scenes insights into the care and training of the orangutans.
The enclosures also incorporated skylights and features that allow for diffused sunlight and warm atmospheric lighting in guest viewing areas, creating an inviting and inclusive space for the animals and visitors. The enhanced environment encourages the orangutans to engage in activities such as climbing, foraging, and interacting with enrichment items placed throughout their habitat.
This renovation was among many efforts to solidify Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium's reputation as the nation's #1 Zoo. Enhancing species-specific enclosures enriches the lives of the animals in the Zoo's care.
